Some of you may have heard that Steve Cropper, the great guitarist for Memphis soul studio / backing band Booker T. & the MG's, recently died. So what better time to feature this 1966 instrumental record of standard Christmas tunes than on Christmas Day 2025. Although I didn't specifically mention him, Cropper played on this Otis Redding album covered previously.

If you're in the mood for something a bit different, a bit funky and a bit groovy, put this record on Christmas morning while your family congregates around the tree. With just one listen you'll be able to tell that the band really put a lot of thought into these covers, making them their own. These tracks have a swing and an almost Bossa Nova rhythm that will keep you moving throughout the day.

Being the blues fan that I am, I would suggest you start out with 'Merry Christmas Baby' which also happens to showcase Cropper's guitar work. Next is 'Winter Wonderland' where Booker T. Jones seems to be channeling Ray Manzarek of The Doors on the organ (or is it the other way around?). Wrap it up with 'Silent Night' and then 'White Christmas' which is a great, upbeat track to hopefully get stuck in your head. I love how Booker T.'s organ comes in around midpoint and takes over the song.
