60. MIDNITE VULTURES by Beck

1999 brought us this Beck record which happens to have my favorite song of his. I mentioned in a previous post how I find Beck’s voice pretty nondescript. While that’s true, I also feel like he can make it sound like anything and everything. That is showcased to full effect on this album. From a computer to a slacker to Prince - it’s all in here. But it’s not just his voice that can do this shapeshifting - each song belongs to a genre of its own. Additionally, one of the best things about Beck is his ability to inject humor into his songs. It requires listening closely to his lyrics, but doing so will reward you in spades. Check out ‘Nicotine & Gravy,’ ‘Peaches & Cream’ and, my favorite, ‘Debra.’
