Welsh-born astrophysicist (she has a PhD) and virtuoso instrumentalist has a new album coming out soon, so now is a good time to take a look at her 2018 debut. American primitive is a finger-picking guitar genre credited to American John Fahey. As such, Raymond’s record has no vocals - it’s pretty much all guitar and some banjo. And, it’s mesmerizing. So, throw on your best set of headphones and have a listen to: ‘Sometimes There’s Blood,’ ‘Sweep It Up,’ ‘Requiem for John Fahey,’ ‘Dance of the Everlasting Faint’ (this will remind you of a classical Indian music *raga*) and ‘Bleeding Finger Blues’ (more bluegrass than blues, but amazing nonetheless).
