284. GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT by Heartworms
Although I covered Jojo Orme in her guise as Heartworms before, this current 2025 record is actually her full length debut. This record clocks in at only about 37 minutes but Orme makes every second count. As I mentioned previously she really reminds me of a less noisy and more techno version of Nine Inch Nails and that holds true for this album too.
Nowhere is this comparison more evident than in the track 'Jacked.' This song is a pure sonic attack that will leave all your senses reeling and has a memorable guitar riff that I can't help but think came about from watching one too many episodes of The Munsters while tripping on ___ (you fill in the blank). Follow that barrage of sound with the more mellow and subdued 'Extraordinary Wings.' And, just like The Killers produced an extraordinary earworm, 'Extraordinary Wings' does the same with "I don't wish murder 'cause I got no right" - just listen to the song all the way through and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Continue your audio journey with 'Mad Catch' which you could probably dance to as it's got such a bouncy beat and then finally end with 'Smugglers Adventure' which is only fitting that it's guitar riff seems to pay homage to fellow goth rockers The Cult's '83rd Dream' off the previously discussed record Dreamtime.
Lastly here's my periodic reminder that all the tracks I mention can be found in the Daily Records playlists both on Apple Music and Spotify.
